When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. The "Declaration Committee" was appointed by Congress on June 11, 1776, to draft a declaration in anticipation of an expected vote in favor of American independence, a vote which then occurred on July 2. The earliest known draft of the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in June, 1776 and was then revised by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and other members of the committee. The final text was formally adopted by Congress on the morning of July 4, 1776. Features
