Dolls Scramble Squares
Doll making did not become an industry in the United States until the 1860s, after the Civil War. Doll manufacturing was first concentrated in New England, and dolls were made from a variety of materials such as leather, rubber, papier-mache, and cloth. Other materials used in doll manufacturing in the 1950s and 1960s included rubber, foam rubber, and vinyl. Vinyl was soft and pliable like skin, and it allowed doll makers to root hair into the dolls head, rather than using wigs or painting hair onto the dolls. Although most dolls are now mass produced using modern materials, many modern doll makers are using the traditional materials of the past to make collectible dolls. Features
